So figured this would be a nice change of pace for my channel. As many of you already know I am a huge 35mm film fan and will support it until the day I die. And being a fan of such I can’t help but own some theater collectibles that have been used in cinemas across the nation throughout the years. And that’s what I’m showing you guys tonight. Ill keep this brief, but the story behind this video: The night of July 11th, 2015. Busy as HELL at the now-closed Twin Hi-Way Drive-In theater in Robinson Township, PA. Cars lined up like sardines out on Steubenville Pike causing a clogged artery of traffic. Among the cars in that line was us, in our Dodge Caravan. Like most everyone else in this line, were here for the pairing on Screen One: Minions and Jurassic World. We pull into the insanely crowded lot of parked cars in front of the huge outdoor brick screen and somehow find a spot that suffices. Its still a good bit until the movie starts, so we grab concessions, walk around, yadda yadda yadda. As Im walking around the premises of the property, I notice an open door on a high-up shack. My eyes widen at the sight of a FIVE-tier platter system with film wound through it. I hit the jackpot. I had assumed this was a digital-converted drive-in considering the Dependable out in Moon Township made the switch-over in May of 2013, and they followed suit here. Not the case. We struck gold. A 35MM outlet near where I live?! In mid-2015, no less?! Someone pinch me, I think Im dreaming.
Anyhoo, movies about to start, and the pre-show ads begin to play. How 35MM advertisements of 2015-era establishments could be in fruition was beyond me. I suppose Screenvision was just feeling super friendly and had enough $$$ to help out a friend in need. Over these, the voice of the Twin Hi-Way Drive In, Jerry Salnoris, makes an appearance. Its his usual pre-movie announcements before the feature presentation, in which he teases coming attractions, special events, and more. In this particular instance, not only does he advertise movies soon to be shown on these screens (listen hard - Pixels, Ant-Man, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible (Ghost Protocol), Vacation (2015) are the ones he lists out), but he also informs audience members about his mothers birthday, which just so happens to be the day we discovered this place. On that day, she turned 93! Thats awesome. As a celebration, he encourages guests to honk their horns in appreciation, and as youre able to hear the response was great.
Overall it was an awesome night - a double feature of modern movies I didnt even know received a 35mm release until then, classic drive-in atmosphere, and flat-out fun. Its too bad I was only there one more time before its frustrating closure. (I say frustrating because the property is now a Sheetz convenience store... as if we needed another one of THOSE.) Had I been informed of its 35MM grace before then, I wouldve made regular weekend trips.
