Randy Ray | My 10 Favorite Sherlock Holmes Novels and Stories (From the Canon, for #victober ) @LiterateTexan | Uploaded October 2023 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
This listing of my 10 favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures draws exclusively from the canon -- that is, the Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories that were written by his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. I would imagine that the Sherlock Holmes pastiche novels and stories number in the hundreds or maybe there are over 1000 of them at one point.
These are my personal 10 favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures in rough order of publication date. You can find my explanations for why each made my list by watching the video.
1- A Study in Scarlet
2- The Sign of Four
3- A Scandal in Bohemia
4- The Speckled Band
5- The Blue Carbuncle
6- The Greek Interpreter
7- The Final Problem
8- The Empty House
9- The Dancing Men
10- Charles Augustus Milverton
Some people suggest starting with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which is the first collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, but I think it's fine to start with the first two novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. It might be fun to read a couple of short stories first just to see how you feel about Sherlock Holmes and Watson before you dive into one of the novels, but you can always DNF the novels, too.
Victober is a month-long readathon celebrating Victorian literature. What's "Victorian literature"? It's just British and Irish literature published and/or written between 1837 and 1901. During the Victorian era. the novel became the most popular form of literature in the English language.
