Jade is hanging out on the beach with her friends and they discuss the events of Plucking Day. There is a party on the beach later that night to celebrate but Jade declines an invitation as her parents expect her home to watch the Plucking celebrations on the TV.
When she gets home she is told off by her parents for being late and sits down to watch TV. Her sister, a previous winner is being interviewed on TV as she has become a national celebrity since returning as a victor a few years before. Her sister Tilly tells the host that even though Jade is eligible for plucking she never would be chosen because she does not consider her sister to be of any worth.
Jade runs outside crying as the ship arrives and plucks her. Her parents run outside amazed that she got plucked and she flips them off (very Aussie) for not believing in her.

- I chose the name Jade because I live in Australia and every second person is called Jade, I have 10 friends with this name it's ridiculous
- Jade's relationship with her parents is not good as they think that she will never be as good as her sister so she has felt rejected all her life
