But the layering of the different instruments and the interocking of the individual elements work rather nicely. The melodic parts just happened. I usually like to play around with different chords but this time i only had two which seem to be still plenty to work with.After a while, i had the idea to write a text, which almost got scrapped entirely, as they usually do. But the ghost writer insisted on me keeping it, so i did. Most of you probably won't understand it though, as it is in german. Why is the name in english then? Because it sounded cooler. The lyrics are about the usual uncertainty of one's own doing.I especially like the build-up and the whole structure of the song. Quite a lucky coincidence as i wanted to make a more aggressive "in your face" electro track for years, but never had the sincerity behind it.The Song turned out to be a mix of the Halloween theme and Mr. Oizo, which i quite enjoy. It came together rather quickly and the last few month went into the mixing and mastering, which was quite a challenge, as i usually do quieter songs. I don't know when somebody is supposed to listen to this track but i guess whenever they feel like it.The artwork was inspired by the batman the animated series art style, which i watched during the early days of the project. Probably not the most fitting, but at least not too boring.I guess that's it for 2024. "Only" five songs got released, which is definitely a huge step down quantity wise from the last years, but we coincidentally made huge step up quality wise (at least in my oppinion). But as new things kept on coming up, the song was pushed back even though it was mostly finished.I think you can hear quite clearly that this song is much older than my previous two in which a lot more action is going on. But "Oublié" was supposed to be more on the simpler side to better focus on the melancholic atmosphere.The recorder is still the same as in Hidden Sickness and a couple of other songs of mine. I've grown to be a recorder enjoyer over the years. A big inspiration of the song was one of the leitmotifs in the Nils Holgersson anime, which is generally full of melancholy and a sense of longing.A lot of time has gone into mixing and mastering in the last few weeks. If you have to wait several months for a new song, it should at least sound as good as possible. I effed up at some small spots, just don't notice them.I really like the airiness and E minor, as well as the outro. Maybe i should have added a few more highlights.The cover has little to do with the song and was created more out of necessity. But it's still better than asking AI for an image.I probably won't be able to do 11 songs as last year, but a fifth song should be possible.
Ed Ryan - There used to be more butterflies Ed Ryan 2024-09-08 | There used to be more butterfliesI wanted to make a waltz but it turned into the usual 4/4 time. First i had developed the main melody, then added layer uppon layer on top of it. Most of my leads usually contain no more than two or maybe three different instruments but in this, the finallies are played by at least ten different voices, which doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be good because of that, but i wanted to try something new and managing more than five different instrumenst at a time definitely wasn't easy especially in the mixing department. One of the Instruments had some tiny disturbing sounds which almost drove me crazy until i could finally get rid of them.The next challenge was to structure the whole song. As nice as the finalies and the whole ensemble sound, i can't let it play the same thing over and over again for four minutes and call it a day. I played around with some chords which let me to the slower parts before, between and after the drops. It would have been impossible for me to create these parts a few years ago, especially the slight melodies playing and developing from beginning to end. Maybe the slow parts are too big of a contrast to the drops and the finallies because they keep it from being an ordinary EDM track but that wasn't my goal to begin with.I really enjoy the slight variations of the main melody and how it morphs into and out of the slower parts.The picture was taken by egomaschine and chosen by me because i liked it and it fit the theme of the song even though it should probably be a bit more lifeless.
Ed Ryan - Hidden Sickness Ed Ryan 2024-07-22 | I originally wanted to create something similar to the songs found on the "Electronic Circus" playlist by Spotify because they all seemed to be the same background-filler-content without any real substance to me and i wanted to do better.I started with the basic drums, then added layer upon layer of different sounds and instruments. Nowadays, i want to focus a lot more on sound design as i still think i'm quite laking in this area. I could rely more on already existing presets to save me some time and headaches, but where is the fun in that?Once i figuered out the chords (especially the "unpleasant" sounding ones) the lead and supporting melodies evolved quite naturally. It almost felt like painting at a certain point.I especially like how many different elements and ideas are present and evolve throughout in under 6 minutes (!). I had songs in the past, almost double in lenght with hardly any more story to tell.The name came after the song and felt like a good fit with the sort of unpleasentness shimmering through the dancey house beat. And combined with the innitial idea (the lifeless, almost ai generated spotify playlist content) and the image of a human (?) introducing an android (?) to smoking (?) i called the project complete.Some fun facts:- the "shrieking/broken-trumpet" is a distorted recorder played by me- the cries scattered throughout the songs are voice samples by nivkii- i had the idea for the cover after seeing images of C-3P0 getting a smoke

I just didn't have the time and energy to push out as many projects as in the years prior due to many other things which demand my time and energy.Nevertheless, i still found the time to work on numerous songs which may drop over the course of the second half of the year. I can't tell how many there are going to be, but hopefully more than just one.This song in particular started with the muddy bass sound which was inspired by Ivy Lab's "Cake" but instead of trap, i turned it into some kind of electro house. It was a pretty fun project all around and i learned a lot of usefull new techniques. My last attempt at a song like this didn't turn out that great so let's see how this one will do.I didn't take the picture myself but i asked the photographer if i was allowed to use it as i thought it expressed a simillar tone as the song.

"Only" 11 this year rather than the 13 in the years prior but what can i say, time doesn't get any slower and there are so many things to do.For this song, I wanted to do something different by aiming for a clean composition as many of my recent projects tended to become quite overloaded and chaotic. To achieve this, I deliberately refrained from using reverb or hall effects, as they make the songs sound quite big but often muddy (like in "Outlaws in Space").It all started with a bell-like sound, which you can hear right from the beginning and evolving throughout the song. I find myself handling the (multi-voiced!) melodies and chord progressions much more fluidly and better now than a year ago, which makes me quite happy. Especially with the variations and transitions.After constructing the house beat and melodies, I wanted to add a mechanical ticking sound because it felt fitting in line with the winding clockwork music box vibe. I don't particularly have a time fetish like some other artists might, but a ticking clock does sound amusing at times. The ticking is just a few high-pitched snares (#sounddesign 😎). At that point, I imagined I was making a remix of an existing song, except I was creating both the "original" and the actual end product myself, much like I did with "Zeldor" back then.The title and the artwork don’t contribute much, but they're meant to match the vibe of "the old music box in the attic that nobody cares about until someone adds a beat and bass to it" and perhaps playfully poke at that idea.There are a few "The Menu" (2022)-like hand claps that occasionally break the whole ensemble. Ed Ryan - I saw a dead person today Ed Ryan 2023-12-11 | I saw a dead person todayFirst i had the title which inspired me to try my hands on a track similar to "still bleeding but not dead yet" from back in 2021, because that project was quite fun and i was sure that i could do better now. I wrote the melody, chords and bridge and after that i wrote the remaining lyrics. I guess that is now the (released) project with the most amount of lyrics written by myself.A problem which occured to me was (as it usually does, while doing a project with vocals) that after adding lanes and lanes of instruments to fill all the empty space i also had to make room for the singing. But later i usually don't want to cut back on any of the instrumental lanes and the whole project ends up sounding pretty cramped.An additional problem was that i didn't get any professional singers from my producer and had to work with what i got. It was inspired by a (sad) waltz from a children show i used to watch. I'm definitely going to make a waltz at some point in the future, but that might still take a while.After the arpeggio i got the dramatic keys and the bassline, which you can hear at the very beginning. Then i got the other lead instruments (guitar, voice and the plug) which interchange throughout the drops.You could read the song as a pulp science fiction show or as its intro in which each drop represents its own episode.I couldn't keep myself from working in some doctor who references like the bassline in the beginning or the "space howling" in the end. The e minor key also isn't a coincidence.I think it's pretty cool that i'm now able to work with chords and melodies much more fluently than a couple of years ago. The songs appeared to be a lot more stiff and undynamic back then. Then i added the kick and bass and finally the "dramatic" synth. Now, it's more like one of those minimal/tech songs i try to do from time to time but with a lot more melody. I got a bit more creative in the structure then usual and implemented i tempo change during the last third. The song was supposed to be about 7 minutes long but i cut it down because the seconds which got cut didn't really contribute anything to the overall song.The text is inspired by planet of the apes (1968) in which the astronaut talks about his long journey inside his vessel, the warped passage of time and his fear of the eternity and the corresponding loneliness. "Stubenhocker" is a person which usually doesn't leave its room.The cover artwork was supposed to show the view through a window into the stars but got a bit more abstract. I change the pitch, tempo, rythm and sometimes try to mix the song with other songs. I don't know how it happened but i layered it with the fight club main theme "stealing fat" (not the pixies' "where is my mind") and got the idea to make a dirty, "punky" drum and bass remix of the song (which came in pretty handy as i was thinking about making an alternative mix anyway as i did with "phantasia" back in 2021).Drum and bass still is quite difficult for me to do as i have problems with designing mainly the drums and the bass, but with this remix, everything went rather smoothly and i quickly had the right sound for the individual parts. I also didn't really bother with changing the overall structure and just added a outro and a tiny intro.As the cover of the "original" was inspired by the colors of spider-man and/or superman, the alternative mix of course had to look different and now tries to mimic the classic colors of batman and wolverine. The ideas for the song began when i rewatched "ali g indahouse" (2002)and some of the hip hop tracks inspired me to give breakbeat another try. The melody and instruments came together quite quickly. About a year ago, i had much more problems constructing long melodies but it seems that i've overcome (some of) those problems. Another big inspiration for the song were probably a couple of Aphex Twin's more chill dnb tracks. It's a bit awkward that my twitter and (private) instagram are both in german so i can't really use them to speak to my non-german-speaking audience (not that it's a huge audience, but i want to be a bit more inclusive). The melody has been lying around in my head for over a year now and the song was innitially supposed to be about something different (maybe even more dramatic) but i couldn't wrap my head around writing the text. Unrelated to that, i wanted to make a song with a similar mood to "another round" (2020) but those attempts didn't realy go anywhere until i tried building a beat inspired by scarlet pleasure's "what a life" with my previously mentioned melody, which turned into this song. The Song itself came together quite smothly so i tried to take extra care of the correct mastering, as, in the past, i always aimed to make the track as loud and big as possible even though it (sometimes) hurt the overall sound of the song. So from now on i'm going to try to make tighter and cleaner mastering which fits the genre of the song. That might sound rather trivial and i had noticed the problem with messy mastering for a while now but it isn't that easy (for me) to make a big decission because they're bound to a lot of self doubt. Ed Ryan - Time Thief Ed Ryan 2022-10-04 | Time ThiefProbably the first "good" drum and bass song by me, even though i don't know if you really can classify it as dnb as the bass isn't the main focus of the song. Usually these kinds of "loud" songs with lots of "spectacel" are very hard for me to do as i can't convey enough energy to make it really pop. But this time everything happened very fluently without any huge post-production difficulties and i'm very happy about that. The name and artwork aren't really tied to the song but rather something i wanted to do for a long time and it seemed to fit to this song. Started in january 2022 as a very different approach and slowly turned into this while being regularly dropped and resurrected. The whole song sprung out of a "puppet-master/marionette-master"-idea because i thought that would be pretty neat for some unconvential minimal-techno (i don't know if that is the correct genre, i hadn't time to check it yet), but then i scrapped that until i revisited that idea. This one is even quieter than my most recent one (grotesques) even though this one is much faster. It also has some similarities to "guess who didn't do his homework" as both are just looping their melodies while changing the pitch, but this one has more variety in the instruments and a more obvious finale. I innitialy wanted to implement some singing and even wrote the text and recorded it but i couldn't make it fit at all. Basically a "back to the roots" track as i've done a lot songs like this one before (or that's how it feels like to me). Even though it doesn't sound like much i actually had to put a lot of effort into mixing and mastering (as i usually do, but this time it was even more frustrating) because the lack of high frequencies combined with the loud bass made a lot of tiny distortions which i had to get rid off. I initially wanted to have some singing/choir in the drops, but i couldn't make it sound good. So i searched through all sorts of instruments to take the lead part instead, but none of them seemed to fit. Then i thought that maybe the bass is the big problem and after fixing the bass, the drums seemed to be the odd ones out. And so on and so on, which got me very frustrated and into a "selfdoubting-mindset".
