I always wanted one of these things, so I designed and built one for myself..
Its an analog computer that analyzes music. It has a microphone for input, and an LED display for output.
The columns of lights correspond to the twelve pitches C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,A#, and B. The rows correspond to octaves. The LEDs illuminate whenever the computer detects that note. Its sort of like a box full of strobe tuners.
You can see in this demo how it gives you a picture of the notes that are being played in a song.
