Reflecting on her own family's experience, she shared the melancholic story of how they left Lahore to rebuild their lives in India amid the chaos that ordinary citizens faced in 1947.
As Chair of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust, Desai has curated the first Partition museums in Amritsar and Old Delhi, aimed at preserving the oral histories, objects, and memorabilia of partition survivors. The museum honours the legacy of one of the largest migrations, which displaced over 20 million people.
In her talk titled "Museums, Memory and Difficult Heritage," Desai shared the efforts behind establishing these museums and the contributions of good Samaritans in making the museums home to a rich and poignant history of the hope, resilience, and loss left behind by the partition.
