This is one of the most robust trials we've ever been involved with.
Multi-year controlled trial at Robert Hall Winery in Paso Robles, collecting tons of metrics (quantitative & qualitative) from soil, vine, harvest, right through to bottle.
All sorts of state-of-the-art monitoring technology here:
✅ Agrology's CO2 monitors (in both soil and leaf canopy).
✅ Gentrek's soil DNA analysis.
✅ Leaf sap analysis.
✅ WineXray analysis of phenolics, tannins, & anthocyanins.
Controlled trial: regen block vs. "conventional sustainable"
➡️ Regen block has diverse cover crops, AEA foliar nutrition, etc.
➡️ "Conventional sustainable" cut out herbicides, but is still using imidacloprid through the drip & systemic fungicides
Preliminary observations of the regen block at harvest:
📈 ~ 2x yield (estimated)
📉 50% less shatter (loss due to poor pollination & fruit set)
📉 50% reduction in water use
📈 Better water holding capacity
📈 Increased soil CO2 release and absorption
📈 Increased canopy CO2 absorption
📈 Thicker, denser leaves
This trial trial was started in 2020 by Robert Hall and Caine Thompson. Big shoutouts to everyone involved: Robert Hall Winery, O'Neill Vintners, Agrology, & Jordan Lonborg of Coastal Vineyard Care Associates.
