Big Rob from CelebHeights reveals how actors sometimes look taller when standing in front of Mugshot Height Charts.
Many actors have been photographed in front of Movie height charts for Mugshots in films and TV and invariably end up looking taller than they should.
I mean Jason Statham at 6ft 2-3, Charles Bronson over 5ft 11, Charles Barkley hitting 6ft 8...Tom Cruise brushing 5ft 11.
Not only do shoes and hair play a part, but also the distance of the camera and the height of the camera off the ground has a key role in determining how tall a celebrity appears in front of a mugshot chart.
Also how far the subject is in front of the height chart plays a role too.
The closer the camera, the more dramatic the effect of altering camera height. Ideally the camera should be closer to the height of the subject and not too close.
So using a few examples, I put myself in front of a mugshot to see how tall I can look:
Firstly I placed the camera about 9 feet away, using 50mm lens and around eyebrow height.
The further away the camera the less height amplification will occur.
I then lowered the camera to around 5 foot high, which made me appear nearly an inch taller against the chart. I look more 5ft 9.
Next I moved the camera closer and used a 40mm lens. Now the camera is about 4.5 feet away from my face but still around eyebrow level. I appear nearer 5ft 9, compared to when we had the camera 9 feet away at eyelevel.
Then I moved the camera to 5 foot and up to 6 foot, then down to 4ft to compare how much taller or shorter I can look in front of the height chart.
There may also be some occasions in which a mugshot chart isn't actually installed properly...but most of the time it's simply due to the way light travels from the lens to the top of the subject's head, then the chart behind them...
The same principle applies to how you position actors beside each other. Depending on camera height, focal length and distance of subjects from the lens, actors can appear taller or shorter in frame.
When you also add in camera tilt perspective, some impressive height differences can be created or even actor's heights reduced.
