This building was originally built in what was swampland according to maps from the 1800s and earlier on the east side of Charleston. Building a basement or a sublevel at all in an area that is currently prone to flooding and is across the street from a lake is strange at best. This building is constructed in a most elegant fashion while juxtaposed with boards over the windows on what may have been the first floor at one time. This provides further evidence of what is commonly called "The Mudflood", and it is evidenced all over Charleston and the world.
