DeltaresHow can worms and plants help dewatering soft sediment? (part 2).
About 6 weeks ago, we started with a clay ripening pilot on our campus in Delft: youtu.be/JXG9WJQNsfk (Part 1)
And for now, we see quite a difference already between the different sections: worms, plants or no treatment. In this video, our expert at Deltares, Miguel Angel de Lucas, gives you a visual demonstration with a 10kg kettlebell to show what the differences look like now, and he will tell you what he expects to happen next.
With this experiment we test new nature-based solutions for the dewatering of soft sediment, for example mine tailings or sludge from waste water treatment. Nature helps to keep coasts, river areas and cities safe and viable. Three months ago we started the dredged sediment biologically enhanced ripening experiment on our Delft campus.
In Europe alone we produce 200 million cubic meters of dredged soft sediment per year. It takes a lot of time and resources to dewater and turn it into, for example, soil. Endorsed by the results of our ongoing dredged sediment ripening pilot, we believe worms and plants can be part of impactful nature-based solutions to dewater soft sediment. Check out our expert Miguel Angel de Lucas, on the experiment’s results. You can clearly see the difference between the various sections (in this video in particular between worms and no treatment, in previous videos amongst all treatments). To reassure you in advance, Miguel managed to climb out of the soft sediment. 😉
“We understand the physical processes involved in the biologically enhanced dewatering of fine sediments and can predict its behavior to a certain extent, but it does not stop to amaze seeing what just a couple of dozen mgs of worms per L of sediment can do to its dewatering speed and bearing capacity. Nature can be a powerful engineering tool, and we are only starting to unveil it”

In Europe alone we produce 200 million cubic meters of dredged sediment per year. It takes a lot of time and resources to dewater and turn it into, for example, soil.
We are testing at Deltares how fast Oligochaete worms and plants turn almost 40 cubic meters of dredged sediment into soil. The same could be applied to other types of soft sediment as, for example, mine tailings or sludge from waste water treatment. This has been tested before on a small scale in the laboratory, and because of the positive results, the experiment is now scaled up. The testing will take a few months.
Meanwhile, Miguel Angel de Lucas, expert at Deltares, will tell you more about his experiment. Also, this item on previously executed related work at laboratory scale might interest you as well: https://lnkd.in/gAD8yGK8

The 2013 floods in Germany caused € 6 billion in lost manufacturing productivity, with another € 400 million in losses in other regions due to supply chain disruption. The Paraná river drought in 2021 threatened water supply in Argentina, increased energy prices in the region and resulted in a loss of more than 100 million dollars for the shipping sector.
Floods can cause casualties, can inflict damage to physical property, temporarily interrupt social and economic activities and force a community to take emergency measures. Droughts limit the availability of water and food, often result in fewer employment opportunities, and reduced potential for energy production.

With the increasing demand for space in the North Sea, combining certain marine functions in a multi-use setting is an advantage. In the Deltabasin, a 50x50 m wave basin, Deltares and other parties are testing the forces of North Sea waves on a hybrid energy island. The island consists of a fixed and a floating part and stores sustainable energy generated offshore from wind farms and transports it to land. The fixed structure consists of a reef that provides protection for the floating platforms. Research in the basin must show whether the reef can slow down the waves sufficiently to create an acceptable swell in the inner ring. The reef is designed to both cope with the effects of rising sea levels and to support the ecosystem as much as possible. The hard substrate in the reef consists of rocks and is crucial for habitat recovery. The leezone of the reef gives seagrasses and seaweeds the space to develop and therefore provides CO2 absorption.
Typhoons (also known as tropical cyclones or hurricanes) are among the most destructive natural disasters worldwide. Typhoons can cause hazardous weather conditions including extreme rainfall and wind speeds, leading to coastal hazards such as extreme storm surge and wave conditions. For example, the Typhoon Hagibis (2019) resulted in the cancellation of several professional sporting events including Rugby World Cup matches and the Formula One Grand Prix race.
In an internal study, researchers from Deltares analyzed the probability and possible consequences of typhoons during the Summer Olympics of 2021 in Tokyo, Japan, and what actions could be taken to minimize adverse consequences during the sporting event to the team and equipment.
