Jackson, MS – A man was fatally shot by a Jackson police officer on Wednesday morning after he and his brother tried to murder the officer during a traffic stop.

The gunfight was captured on video.

The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. at a Valero gas station, when a Jackson police officer pulled over a white SUV for a traffic violation, WAPT reported.

The officer made contact with the driver, 30-year-old Elliot Reed. Reed’s brother, 26-year-old Chauncey Reed, was riding in the front passenger seat.

The officer was seen speaking with Elliot, while standing inside the open door of Elliot’s vehicle, surveillance footage showed.

Elliot then stepped out of the SUV, and a struggle ensued between him and the officer.

The officer grabbed Elliot around his legs at one point, and the men fell against the open door and a nearby vehicle.

Chauncey jumped out of the passenger side of the vehicle, and made his way towards the altercation.

The men struggled with the officer, and forced him backwards through a small space between the open SUV door and a nearby vehicle.

Elliot grabbed the officer, while Chauncey reached back inside the SUV.

He then drew out a weapon, and began shooting at the officer, The Kansas City Star reported.

Elliot and the officer fell to the ground behind a nearby vehicle, the video showed.

The officer quickly recovered, and fired his weapon at the brothers as he rushed to seek cover behind the trunk of his patrol vehicle. He fired additional rounds at the SUV, shattering the vehicle’s driver’s side window.

Police said that Elliot was hit multiple times during the gunfight, WDAM reported. He died at a local hospital several hours later.

Chauncey was taken into custody, and has been charged with capital murder and aggravated assault on a peace officer. Investigators said his actions during the altercation resulted in Elliot’s death.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was leading the ongoing investigation, WAPT reported.

On Thursday, Chauncey was released from the Hinds County detention center “in error,” the sheriff’s office said, according to WAPT.

He was apprehended by Jackson police and U.S. marshals at approximately 11:30 p.m., and was being held at the Madison County Jail.

Command staff at the Hinds County detention center were reviewing the circumstances of the murder suspect’s accidental release.

The brothers’ family and friends rallied in his defense in the wake of the officer-involved shooting, and many said they did not believe the men had done anything to harm the officer.

"I think the whole thing is messed up,” one of the suspects’ cousins, who did not want to be named, told WLBT. “They say he was shooting at the police? I don't believe that. Because that's my little cousin. I know he ain't gonna shoot at no police.”

“He was a good person. He didn’t bother anyone,” one of Elliot’s friends, who also did not want to be named, told the news outlet. “Everybody has their flaws – who’s to say they didn’t just kill him because they felt threatened by him?”
