A city reject becomes the embodiment of exceptional bonsai design.
Grown in California “oak country” at a nursery in the foothills of the Sierras, this Mount Tabor oak was originally intended to be a street tree for the city of Sacramento. Denied and set aside because of its lack of ideal verticality, what was “imperfect” in one context made for intriguing material to explore as bonsai.
After an intensive repotting from the field into a bonsai container, dieback along one side of the trunk met with thick, plated bark, advancing the narrative for this Mediterranean inspired oak. Over the duration of four years on Mirai Live, this oak transformed from a rejected street tree into an example of the epitome of bonsai design.
