Mount Sinai was already called the Mountain of God before Moses ever arrived. 🏔️ Exodus 3:1 names it har ha-Elohim BEFORE the burning bush, before the Law, before anything happened there. That one detail changes everything we thought we knew about where the real Mount Sinai is.
Here is what the text actually says:
Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, was a priest of Midian. Not the Sinai Peninsula. Midian is northwestern Saudi Arabia. His home was at al-Bad', just 20 miles from Jabal al-Lawz, the tallest mountain in the region and the one the oldest Jewish, Greek, and Arab sources kept pointing to as the true Mount Sinai.
And the oldest poetry in the Hebrew Bible agrees. Deuteronomy 33, Judges 5, and Habakkuk 3 all sing the same geography: Seir, Paran, Teman. Every name points south and east. Into Arabia.
Moses didn't bring God to Sinai. Sinai was where God had been waiting.
