It’s been a long time since I made anything non-MAP related, and after participating in PeppermintPretzel’s ‘Fell in Love with a Girl’ MAP, I started thinking about MothPool.
Now, I have to be honest with you. I haven’t done much shipping stuff for years, and I’m not sure if it’s adulting or just not dealing with a fandom for a long period of time. But a few animations (the MAP and moon pool’s ‘Dizzy’ AMV) have made me consider ships I really didn’t pay attention to for a while. I typically just go with whatever canon dictates, so bear with me while I try to fit MothPool into the Warriors story we all know:
Mothwing and Leafpool have always had a thing for each other. Leafpool admired Mothwing as an apprentice, and Mothwing, after getting over the loss of Mudfur and her religion, soon came to have a special affection for the little ThunderClan medicine cat.
However, Mothwing had the threat of Hawkfrost on her shoulders, and Leafpool could not shake the horror of Mothwing’s loss of faith in StarClan. Mothwing emotionally pushed Leafpool away and Leafpool struggled with the loss of a possible relationship. So, when Crowfeather proclaimed his love for her, Leafpool immediately took him.
It was not a secret. Everyone in the Clans knew that Leafpool and Crowfeather tried to run away. Rumors spread, jokes were made, but no one was as affected by this as Mothwing. After Hawkfrost’s death, Mothwing realized that she was free to make her own decisions again. But Leafpool, watching Squirrelflight raise her children in secret, could not bear to break the medicine cats’ code again. In a cruel twist of fate, it was Leafpool who pushed Mothwing away, and the two had a falling out that resulted in cool attitudes with each other for several moons.
Leafpool’s secret was outed, and Mothwing felt the distance between them grow. Here was a cat she confided her deepest and darkest secret to, with a secret she kept even from her. Mothwing, however, became closer to Jayfeather, and learned that despite everything, Jayfeather still maintained a sort of respect for the fallen medicine cat. His feelings seeped into Mothwing, and after The Great Battle and Leafpool returned to her position, Mothwing found herself welcoming Leafpool back as if nothing had ever pushed them apart.
This PMV occurs after Omen of the Stars, while Leafpool is still settling back into her old life. Mothwing confesses her feelings and Leafpool admits that she feels the same way. There are finally no more secrets between them.
I don’t see them as mates, only two cats who share a special bond that cannot be broken. Leafpool broke the medicine cat code before, and would probably never do something that would threaten her place in ThunderClan again. Mothwing, likewise, would not want a heavy burden on her own shoulders. While they hang out together at Gatherings and Moonpool meetings, they don’t break the code or sneak out to see each other (that’s young cat stuff, and these ladies are starting to get a little old). Instead, they are satisfied with meeting each other twice a moon to gossip, cuddle a little, and be assured that their hearts belong with each other.
Sorry that got a little long, but I felt like a headcannon PMV deserves a bit of an explanation. This was a lot of fun to put together and I hope to do more videos like this in the future!
