MBARI and our partners at the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project would like to thank all of the resilient mothers above and beneath the waves.

The first captivating image in this video was taken by Greta Shum in the notoriously stormy Southern Ocean on a SOCCOM expedition on the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer. The woman in the image calmly watches as a large wave enters the Baltic Room, where the operations crew deploys and recovers equipment. She is strapped into a safety line and patiently tucks in behind the door to wait for a moment to safely perform the task at hand.

MBARI scientists have made a few stunning discoveries of parental care in deep-sea cephalopods as we explore the deep ocean with our remotely operated vehicles. The mother squid, Gonatus sp., carries thousands of eggs in her arms, making eating and defending herself from predation all but impossible. She does this to give her young the best chance of hatching and surviving until they can defend themselves from predation.

The feather star, Florometra serratissima, appears to gracefully dance through the water as it swims off of a rocky outcrop, presumably to avoid a disturbance or relocate itself to another spot on the seafloor.

MBARI researchers, along with partners at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary are studying an aggregation of octopuses that we fondly refer to as the Octopus Garden on Davidson Seamount. The octopuses, Muusoctopus robustus, guard their eggs against predators by covering the egg clusters with their bodies.
