My first official gig with Mother Gumball, who had come off of a few years on the covers circuit. We decided to focus on writing our own material and were fortunate enough to unveil our new sound for the first time while supporting A Flock of Seagulls at Riehle Brothers Tavern in Lafayette, IN. This particularly melodramatic song was something I brought to the band just weeks before this gig. The verses, refrains & pre-choruses were all mostly complete, but the song was dying for a great chorus hook. Chris Smith cooked up the missing ingredient & after a Sunday afternoon of arranging, the song was done. Notice the "cheat sheet" at the beginning of the song. I hadn't even memorized my own lyrics yet! :) Dedicated to an old childhood friend of mine, who inspired the song to begin with.
