Light woods are everywhere right now, especially white oak. But if you've ever applied finish to a light-colored wood species, you've probably noticed something frustrating: the wood suddenly turns yellow, orange, or amber.
In this video, I test a variety of popular finishes on white oak and maple to see which ones preserve that clean, natural appearance and which ones dramatically change the color.
We'll compare traditional oils, oil-based varnishes, hardwax oils, and water-based finishes to help answer one common question:
What's the best non-yellowing finish for white oak?
Along the way, you'll learn why finishes change wood color, which products stay closest to the unfinished look, and why one centuries-old Scandinavian finish might be the most interesting option of all.
