Luminita, 9, lives in Inelet, a tiny remote village in Romania’s Carpathian range. Every morning, she walks down mountain paths where wild dogs prowl. Her journey through this majestic but hostile natural setting takes more than an hour.
William lives in the little village of Chala Pampa in Peru, the cradle of America’s most ancient civilization. William, who is 12, walks with his brothers and sisters for more than two and a half hours to reach the only schools in the valley more than 1,000 meters below.
Nicol and Niessa live in a huge open-air dump where the stench is overwhelming. Only a few of the girls from their shanty town can attend school. Every day, it takes them three hours to cross Manila. Surrounded by the roar of traffic, they sell a few trifles on their way to class.
