On this week’s Hafta, the panel was unsparing about the Modi government’s muted response to the killing of three Indian seafarers in the Gulf of Oman by a US military strike.
Jayashree Arunachalam called it “the most cowardly that India has been,” noting the country “couldn't even say boo” and “couldn't name the incident” or “the sailors”. Manisha Pande agreed, drawing a direct comparison to how previous governments handled similar diplomatic crises. “I completely agree with Jayashree, especially when you compare it to Manmohan Singh’s reaction [to the killing of two Indian fishermen by Italian marines],” Manisha said, recalling how the former prime minister had stated “very categorically… back then that they violated rules and they will suffer.”
Rinchen Norbu provided further global context, citing NATO’s 1999 bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade during the Kosovo War. Rather than staying quiet, Beijing condemned the strike, ultimately securing an official apology from then-US President Bill Clinton and $32.5 million in monetary compensation from Washington for the damage and loss of life.
