Once again we see the culture war generating all sorts of new "experts" that talk talk and talk about stuff they have never cared about nor read anything about for their entire life.

Surnames and Feudal Japan is a highly misunderstood topic, mostly due to myths that have become "facts" but also the wrong interpretation of Edo period laws that were indeed passed by the government when it comes to surnames and the general non samurai population.

On this video I'll try my best to clarify a few factors, but differently from the culture war vultures, I'll present period evidence to confirm my takes on this matter.
