Watters Trail South Extension is a key infrastructure project that will enhance regional connectivity, making it easier for people to walk, run and bike between Allen and nearby cities.
The extension will start just south of The Montgomery Apartments at Watters Creek and continue to the future Rowlett Trail, which is now in its final design stage.
Key features of the project include the replacement of sections of aging existing trail adjacent to Watters Creek Village, the construction of a pedestrian bridge over a natural drainage corridor, and the use of durable, low-maintenance materials, ensuring they can last for years with minimal maintenance. The design complements the natural landscape while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding development, enhancing both recreation and mobility for residents.
“While only one-quarter of a mile long, Watters Trail is a significant connection near the golf course that goes north all the way to Spirit Park,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kate Meacham.
The trail extension is expected to cost approximately $1.1 million to construct and is estimated to take around six months, with completion anticipated by early summer 2026. Construction will coincide with the Rowlett Trail extension, a nearly 2-mile project that is scheduled to begin in late spring of 2026. Once finished, the Rowlett Trail will also connect to Plano’s Bluebonnet Trail.
Upon completion, the Watters Trail South extension will provide enhanced recreational access to The Courses at Watters Creek, while creating a seamless connection into the broader Allen and Collin County trail networks.
