모란봉악단 - 아버지 어머니의 청춘시절
Music: Ri Mun (리문) 1995
Text: Kim Yong-jol (김영절)
Recorded: 2012.10.11 Mokran Video DPRK
When this song was written in 1995 they were facing the third arduous march of severe food shortages. The music has a touch of sadness, perhaps even mourning for those who did not make it. But, there is also a build up of determination to fight the hard times ahead.
The father and mother represent the heroic fore figures who during the second arduous march after the war in the 1950s, managed to rebuild the country in short time. At the Kangson steel works, built for a capacity of 60 000 tons, they actually doubled the production to 120 000 by working day and night. They also completed the new Haeju - Hasong railway line in just 75 days.
At that time the inspirational fore figure was President Kim Il-sung himself, who during the guerilla fights in December 1938 made his famous 100 days long first arduous march to avoid the Japanese forces. Perhaps the text line "In the falling snow of December" also refers to that?
Anyone who thinks he can defeat the Koreans just by putting hardship on their people should study their modern history. They know their own history well and will use it as an inspiration to overcome any hard times in the future. They also know that if their society would begin to fall apart (like in the late 19th century) their women might once again get raped, murdered with their bodies burned, and their independence taken from them.
