In 1921, the sheriff of Cherokee County, Georgia learned that moonshiners had set up shop in the Franklin Creighton Mine. He grabbed the bailiff and drove to the old shaft, where two were arrested. The car broke down, and as one escaped into the woods, the other pulled out a pistol and shot the two. The bailiff would die of his wounds.
