Adorama | Moody Studio Lighting Tips for Masculine Models | Take & Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey @Adorama | Uploaded June 2024 | Updated October 2024, 6 days ago.
Lighting is very rarely limited by the subject, but sometimes there is a lighting look that suits a person’s style. If you’re after a moody, dramatic look that emphasizes texture and contours, then moody masculine lighting styles such as Rembrandt lighting, Loop lighting, and Rim lighting might be just what you need.
In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey takes you through three different lighting setups, all of which make use of hard light, creating a sudden and dramatic change from light to shadow. Each look uses the same two lights with surprisingly little repositioning, but the results are very different.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, experimenting with these lighting styles can add depth and variety to your portrait work and help you to create powerful and striking male portraits that really stand out.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to YouTube. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.
