IMPORTANT EDIT ON EXPEDITIONS WITH FRIENDS:
So far there is no way of going on expeditions with friends or squad members directly.
The work-around is to go on a quest with friends to the area you want to expedition in.
After the quest is finished everyone has to choose to stay in the area ('go back to camp'). Now you can keep on expeditioning with your friends and/or squad members.

We are having a look at the online mode for Monster Hunter: World.
Unfortunately it is a little bit clumsy and therefore leads to gathering hubs that are empty most of the time.
People will more likely join your game directly from a notice board in their town or react to your SOS flare.
