This week on Cultural Manifesto, Kyle Long speaks with the internationally acclaimed pianist, composer, educator, and author Monika Herzig.
Born in Germany and based in Bloomington, Indiana, Herzig has become one of the Midwest’s most influential voices in contemporary jazz. Her recordings have topped jazz radio charts, and she has received numerous honors recognizing her artistic achievements and commitment to jazz education.
Herzig has earned widespread recognition for her project SHEROES, which celebrates the contributions of women in jazz. She’s also the author of Experiencing Chick Corea: A Listener’s Companion and David Baker: A Legacy in Music.
Her latest album, Transparent, is one of the most personal projects of her career. Inspired by her journey supporting a transgender child, the album uses jazz as a vehicle for empathy, storytelling, and connection. Through original compositions and collaborations with acclaimed musicians, Herzig explores themes of identity, and acceptance.
