On June 1, 2024, a "fury"-driven road rage chase in Kent, UK, resulted in the death of 4-year-old Peter Maughan and left his father paralyzed.
The Chase: Owen Maughan, 27, and his father, Patrick Maughan, 54, pursued a Ford Ranger pick-up truck containing their relatives for several miles along the A2. Before the pursuit, the pair had consumed approximately 25 alcoholic drinks.
The Collision: Owen deliberately rammed the family’s vehicle at roughly 60mph. The impact caused the truck to roll multiple times, ejecting 4-year-old Peter, who died from severe injuries to his head, chest, and abdomen.
Victims: Peter’s father, Lovell Mahon, suffered a fractured skull and is unlikely to walk again. Peter’s mother, Hayley Maughan, and his one-year-old sister survived with minor injuries.
Evidence: Hayley Maughan captured the terrifying pursuit on her phone, filming the Maughans' erratic driving and recording the family's panic.
Legal Outcome: On February 19, 2026, both men were cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter. Owen had previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Sentencing is pending.
