I have hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of Moe Norman hitting golf balls — clinics, range sessions, even footage of the two of us hitting balls together. But there's one short clip I come back to more than any other. In this video I break down why it's the most important piece of Moe footage I own.
It's a 7-iron from 1998. Moe is flying it about 150–160 yards with a motion so pure the ball comes off with authority, dead straight, and even Moe is commenting on how clean it is. What makes it my favorite isn't distance or flash — it's what I call "purity of technique".

Watch closely and you see the whole secret: Moe takes the club back to about nine o'clock, sets a little leverage, and then just lets the hands rip through the impact zone. That stretch from roughly shoulder height down through the ball is where the speed actually lives. He's not over-swinging or reaching for power — he lets the technique and the mass of the club do the work.
And don't buy the myth that Moe was short. At 64 years old he was carrying it 265–270 yards. That's what efficient, on-plane technique gives you. Speed comes FROM technique, not from effort.
The beauty of the Single Plane setup is that it makes all of this easier — Moe starts in a position where all he has to do is go up and down, back to back, right on plane. Simplicity at its finest.
Great golf isn't about more effort. It's about becoming more efficient with the effort you're already putting in. Build a simple swing, get perfect mechanics, and return to impact the most efficient way possible.
