TheRetroChannel | Modified C-128 DCR Integral Diag 1.0 (325109-01) - READ DESCRIPTION @TheRetroChannel | Uploaded April 2022 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
WARNING: LOUD POPS AND ANNOYING SID NOISES.
This is a modified C-128 DCR Integral Diag 1.0 (325109-01) running on a Commodore 128D.
This particular diagnostic requires a harness different from the standard 586220 diagnostic that is practically unobtainable - it will normally halt when it detects an error due to the harness not being connected. But after a modification by Jani from World of Jani, it will now continue the tests even when an error is detected.
The video shows the outputs of both RGBI (80 column) on the left, and AV (40 column) on the right.
The first half of the test checks the function of the Z80, VDC, both RAM banks, colour RAM, CIA timers, interrupts, and ROMs (not sure which ROMs it actually checks). The original test will normally hang starting from the I/O port tests (this part requires the harness) so these tests are skipped thanks to Jani's modification. After that the SID is tested followed by a quick video test and then the C64 ROM checksums are... checked. At this point the diagnostic stops and only the timers will continue to count up. The second half of the test contiues after a reset (push the reset button).
The second half checks the 1571 disk drive (this will fail if running on a 128 flat and no disk drive is connected). This test requires a blank double sided disk (both notches cut out) that has been preformatted in double sided 1571 mode (1328 blocks free). It will fail if the disk has only been formatted in single sided mode (664 blocks free). I used the C128 factory test v1.2 to format the disk correctly - the BASIC V7.0 "HEADER" command will not work if the disk is already formatted as single sided (it just formats the single side again). If anyone knows an easier way to format as double sided, please put it in the comments. During this test the 80 column display will be blank - it is possible to run this test on the 80 column display when the 40/80 column key is on.
After the disk drive test is complete, hitting "C" for Continue will run the disk drive test again.
Big thanks to Jani, please see blog.worldofjani.com/?p=164 for more info.
