Modernizing Ceph Deployments at CERN: CephFS and Object Storage Across Data Centres - Enrico Bocchi, CERN
The Ceph deployment at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) exceeds a raw capacity of 100 PBs and backs the entirety of the on-premise cloud infrastructure with blocks, objects, and files storage, supporting the community of scientific researchers. After 12+ years of operation in production, we revisit our storage infrastructure, exploring recent CephFS features and complementing the existing service with object stores and filesystems spanning over two data centers.
In this talk, we present on our investigations about multiple filesystems backed by a common set of hardware resources, CephFS metadata balancing strategies, and CephFS disaster recovery procedures. We also report on early experience operating multisite object stores and stretch CephFS clusters, describing configuration tweaks and monitoring needs.
