Pirate Coasts: Terror on Asia’s Seas explores two piracy hotspots: the Malacca Strait, a key global shipping lane, and the Sulu and Celebes Sea, infamous for militant piracy. In the Southern Philippines, the extremist group Abu Sayyaf, tied to Al-Qaeda and ISIS, has terrorized these waters with kidnappings, piracy, and gun trafficking. The film recounts the ordeal of German sailor Jürgen Kantner, kidnapped and killed by the group, and investigates counterterrorism efforts to dismantle their operations.
