Hot off the success of their last entry and keen to capitalise on the popularity of Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, 2010 saw the release of Gameloft’s next big mobile FPS - Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus.
Building on the foundation laid by Sandstorm, Black Pegasus aimed to be bigger in almost every way - a longer campaign, more varied mission design, improved controls, better visuals, and a fully expanded multiplayer mode. At the time, it felt like Gameloft doubling down on the idea that mobile shooters could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with console experiences.
But over a decade later, how well does it really hold up?
In this retrospective, we take a deep dive into Modern Combat 2’s campaign, multiplayer, gameplay improvements, and overall place in mobile gaming history, breaking down what it improved over its predecessor, what still holds up today, and why many fans still consider it one of Gameloft’s strongest shooters.
