Since his childhood model railroader Eddy De Wilde, who lives in Sint-Niklaas in Belgium, is fascinated by model trains, model railways or model railroads. He is a member of the railway modelling club „Modelspoorclub Het Spoor” and of the model railroading club “De Zwitserse Treinclub”. Thus he gained more and more knowledge and learned all kinds of skills in rail transport modeling.
Eddy De Wilde built many small model train dioramas, which presented the railways and railroads of the Alps, especially Austria and Switzerland. For his new model railroad layout, presented in this video, he was inspired by the „Bernina Railway“ in the Swiss canton of the Grisons, near the lake „Lago di Poschiavo“.
The narrow-gauge model railway layout consists of six segments and has a size of 3.0 x 0.90 meters. The visible section has a size of 2.0 x 0.45 meters and depicts a small part of the lake „Lago di Poschiavo“ in the foreground. In the middle, there is located the fictitious train station of „Mirabernina“. In the far background, we can see a road built into the steep mountains. A background wallpaper and smart lighting add depth to the landscape.
The small train station of „Mirabernina“ has one platform and two tracks. There is also a third track for shunting. On the right side, the model trains enter the Swiss miniature world through a tunnel. On the left side, Eddy De Wilde wanted to avoid a second tunnel and decided to build a city gate, which the trains would have to pass to enter the diorama. The city gate and the surrounding houses were built entirely by hand, using fluff cardboard, roofing sheets, loose windows and doors and material from the junk box.
The Italian influence is clearly noticeable in the architectural style of the buildings. After all, the original railway line is located less than 20 kilometers from the Swiss-Italian border. The overhead line (catenary) was built entirely from brass profiles, brass wire and insulators made by manufacturer Sommerfeldt so that the electric locomotives can touch the contact wire.
