For many of us, Italian trains and railways always give a feeling of being on vacation in Italy. The Dutch model railroader Maurice Kleverwal probably felt the same way when he was thinking about which theme he should realize in a model railroad diorama.
In his one meter wide shelf layout in 1/87 scale, he wants to depict sun, palm trees and the famous Italian feeling of “Dolce Vita”. So he decided to create the small railway station of the fictitious town of Giacomo. In the palm-filled Italian coastal town of Giacomo, life is quiet and peaceful and the station is nestled between brightly colored houses.
To the left, the HO shelf layout is bordered by a tunnel through which trains enter or exit the fiddle yard. To the right side, the Italian model railway diorama is bordered by the station building, so that the entry and exit of model trains from the fiddle yard is cleverly concealed.
While local trains stop at the railway station from time to time, people drink their coffee on the square, pick up their bread at the bakery or meet at the “Trattoria” (food shop). The passenger train is pulled by an electric locomotive of the Italian class FS E.646 painted in gray-green color, and the freight train is pulled by an electric locomotive of the Italian class FS E.645 painted in red-brown color. Both locomotives and the rest of the rolling stock are made by model train manufacturer ACME and Rivarossi (Hornby).
