Composer Per Ebdrup is a multi platinum Danish producer behind many pop projects including SWING REPUBLIC who have notched up 10s of millions of streams and were one of the pioneering acts behind the global phenomena of Electro Swing. He has written many albums, currently has other projects with Sony Musc among others and has been a ghost producer on many other high profile pop projects.
MODAL PROJEKT was conceived as a way to combine some exciting opposites. Jazz and atmospherics. The 9 track album (with one 'drum less' remix) evolved with releases over the last few years as a high quality recording project with deep integrity. Remaining absolutely true to the original concept, it combines modular synthesiser sound beds and atmospherics with electronic production and modal jazz (of which 'Kind of Blue' by Miles Davis is the most famous example - improvisations around modes rather than chords) - thus MODAL PROJEKT combines improvisation from guest musicians from the world of Jazz - Peter Marott (Mute Trumpet) and Jan Harbeck (Tenor Sax of Jan Harbeck Quartet) play on 4 tracks and are well established on the Danish jazz live scene. Alex Bone guests on 2 tracks and is a former Young British Jazz Musician of the Year. He is an up-coming Alto Sax player who has worked with Nils Rodgers and is building a solo career. Bennett Holland joins for 3 tracks on Piano, Fender Rhodes and Hammond Organ. An official 'Hammond Hall of Fame' artist, Bennett is a session player on many records (including some 'hits' from the house music world) and also a full-time member of the highly respected blues band Laurence Jones.
With average lengths between 5 and 9 minutes, each track offers an extended mood, with highs and lows, light and shade, around which the guest musicians are invited to improvise. Although some slight post-performance editing has taken place we were really keen to maintain the character and initial response of the musicians to the music so that what you hear captures an organic and very human response via their instrument to the more programmed and very much electronic moment. Thus the journey and thinking are foremost. Man meets machine. Organic meets electronic.
