In conjunction with the fall exhibition Vision in a Cornfield (September 7-December 30, 2012) curated by M. Saffell Gardner, Rebecca Mazzei and Cary Loren, MOCAD presents Box #1, a limited edition journal that takes the form of an archive of artist multiples. Inside you will find a collection of original art works, essays, poems, music and ephemera related to the theme of Afrofuturism in Detroit. Among many rare items, this publication includes a 12" LP of recordings from Sun Ra Live in Detroit in 1979-80, as well as a reprint of Faruq Z Bey's text of music theory and existentialism, Toward a 'Ratio'nal Aesthetic. Covers were hand-painted by Efe Bes.
This journal is an homage to a fluxus quarterly of the same name produced in 1971 by artists affiliated with the California institute of the Arts. Box #1 is edited by Cary Loren and Rebecca Mazzei and is available for $100 in the MOCAD Store. Limit 2 per customer. Priced at $150 as of October 1.
