The Best Mechanics From Bad Games
updated
Skyrim is one of the most consequential games ever made. It has stayed overwhelmingly popular since it's release, and I often find myself wondering...why? Skyrim has no shortage of flaws, yet it cemented a place as an all time great that people are still playing to this day. So, I've spent a good chunk of the last few months trying to find out what all has led Skyrim to become Skyrim.

Rewards are an interesting part of games. They are one of the biggest drivers of player behavior, for better and for worse, and I thought it'd be worthwhile to look into how they work in a lot of games, and examine the ups and downs of any given approach because like all things game design, there is no perfect way to do it, but there are some ways that are cooler than others. So, yeah, let's talk about how rewards are kinda weird.

With Tears of the Kingdom's release, I wanted to drop my wife back into the world of Hyrule to see how she handles this iteration's increased mechanical complexity, so that's what I did, and, as always, it was a lot of fun to watch. She certainly has come a long way since first playing Breath of the Wild, so it was a joy to watch her take the next step in her video game education.

Difficulty is one of the most important things about a game, and as there are so many different kinds of players out there, it is pretty much impossible to balance things perfectly. Since putting out "The Games I Wish I Hadn't Replayed" I've been thinking a lot about games from my past, and how I feel about them now, and one thing I started to realize is that there are a handful of games that I feels as if I love, but honestly can barely tell you anything about them. This is a natural part of life, but the part of it I keep getting hung up on is that I have many opinions on games and other things despite having virtually no memory of them. So, I wanted to dig into it a bit by looking at a few games I've forgotten, whether or not anything can be done about it, and, of course, if anything should be done about it.

Music is a powerful tool that can be used to get people to feel a certain way, and I think some of the best examples of it being implemented effectively can be seen with villain themes. When done right, they can create such a suffocating feel to them and I want to look at some of the ways three of my favorite villain themes are successful in creating that sense.

Here is my tierlist of DLC I've played: nebula.tv/videos/razbuten-the-dlc-tierlist
DLC encompasses a vast amount of content, and while there are many pieces of it that are disposable, there are others that provide experiences that rival and even exceed the quality of the base game. From Blood and Wine to Minerva's Den, these expansions are some of the best video game content out there, and in this video I not only wanted to look into why that is but also into how it comes to be, so I reached out to a few developers to learn about what goes into making DLC.

Reports of Gaming For A Non-Gamers' death have been greatly exaggerated. For this episode, I had my wife try out one of FromSoft's many masterpieces, Elden Ring. While the Soulsborne series is notoriously difficult, especially for those who are trying to get into it for the first time, I was curious to see the ways in which Elden Ring attempts to ease in new players, and I was surprised to see that it does way more than most give it credit for.

There are a ton of ways to play a game outside of how the developers intended it to be played, and people's desire to do that has always fascinated me. What about certain titles makes them so interesting to mess around in and why is playing games in weird ways so appealing to so many people? So this video is a look at some of the reasons I (and others) enjoy playing games in the "wrong" way.

One of the primary ways we talk about games is by comparing them to other titles--sometimes ones that are similar and sometimes ones that aren't. Unsurprisingly this leads to a fair amount of misunderstandings about games, and I think it's worth looking at the major ways comparison influences gaming discourse and discuss whether or not it is net positive or negative. So, consider this video the Dark Souls of video essays, and let's jump into it.

Mini-maps. Love them or hate them, they are in a ton of games, and they are extremely useful. So much so that, oftentimes, turning them off isn't a viable option. In this video, I examine ways in which mini-maps are over-relied on in certain titles (The Witcher 3) as well as games that are designed in a way that don't really need any sort of navigational UI (Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring).

Companions are one of the most long-honored traditions of the Zelda series. Since Ocarina of Time, they have found their way into the majority of entries, but given how the franchise has moved away from them in recent years, it begs the question: should they ever return? Walking. It is in a lot of games, and on its own, it is kind of boring. However, plenty of games that use it are still enjoyable. From Death Stranding to various Naughty Dog games to anything in the walking-sim genre, people don't get bored out of their mind while playing them, so how is that? While open-world games aim to be ambitious in ways few games are, they often end up following a structure that doesn’t actually support their worlds. In this video I examine why I think games like Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn and Red Dead Redemption 2 fall short, and how they could take ideas from other titles in order to make their worlds matter more.

Where a game decides to roll its end credits has a massive impact on player behavior. It is a signal that the "intended experience" has been completed, but as many games have extremely important optional content, this can end up causing players to miss out on what makes a game truly special. In this video, I try to work through the muddy waters of if it is better for developers to make sure players experience the best content in a game or be willing to let them miss things.

Sound design is an incredibly important part of games and really all media that sometimes doesn’t get the attention it deserves. The way sound designers are able to communicate ideas and emotions through sounds alone is incredibly fascinating, and I’ve found myself being drawn to how sounds relate to one particular emotion: loneliness. With so many of my favorite titles from Outer Wilds to Breath of the Wild to Hollow Knight to Dark Souls to Journey exploring themes of solitude, designers have to find ways to make games sound lonely, so I tried to look into some of the sounds and techniques that I find make me feel lonely when I hear them.

There are many emotions that games aim to tap into in order to provide specific experiences for players, and one of the most powerful is frustration. However, using frustration as a mechanic can be pretty dangerous as it risks pushing folks away. This video looks at titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Dark Souls, The Last Guardian and The Last of Us Part II to examine the ups and downs of including elements that will frustrate players.

When I was younger, nearly every time I played a new game, I couldn't help but think "this is the best game I've ever played." As I have gotten older that feeling happens for less often, and I wanted to explore some of the reasons why. When making this, I had a really great conversation with Chris McEntee (a game designer currently at Respawn, previously at Moon Studios and Ubisoft) which helped hone in some of the ideas I was circling around, so a big thank you to him for that. You can follow him here: twitter.com/chrismcentee

There are thousands of indie games that are truly incredible but don't get the love they deserve for various reasons, so I decided to give recommendations for 8 that I especially love and think you all should play if you haven't. If you already have played them all, then I am sorry that I have nothing to offer you, but dang you have good taste. Nice work.

I've been playing a lot of short open-world games, and despite them only taking a couple hours to beat, there is something about a lot of them that just feels massive. For me, they embody a sense of discovery and exploration more effectively than some titles that are 10 times longer, and I wanted to spend some looking into why that might be. So, this is how small open-world games feel big.

I adore moments in video games that slow down the pace and ask players to reflect on life, video games, and the pursuit of happiness. Whether it be taking a bath in Ghost of Tsushima, sitting at a bonfire in Dark Souls, or looking out at some giraffes in The Last of Us, these moments help ground players, and remind them that sometimes the need to slow down and just check the vibe. So, this is Vibe Checks in Video Games.

Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite games ever made, but there are elements about it that I wish had been a bit different. Here is my best attempt at trying to solve those problems without reinventing the whole game. I like doing these sorts of thought experiments in order to try to better understand game design and what I like about games. Does this video matter much? lol no but hopefully it is interesting and fun, and maybe, just maybe some of these ideas will make their way in to Breath of the Wild 2. Anyway this is my attempt at fixing Breath of the Wild.

Getting all of the achievements and trophies in a game is often a grueling task that I am intrigued by, but I almost always walk away feeling disappointed. The reason I complete a game in the first place is because I enjoy it, but when I actually do it, I end up resenting it. So in this video I discuss some of the troubles with completing games and conducted interviews with people far more knowledgeable than me to get a better sense of what goes into actually good achievements. So this is my video on completing games (and why I barely do it).

I am back at it again with a video examining (read as complaining) a game mechanic that I think is underutilized in games. This time it is crafting. The idea of crafting in video games really appeals to me, but so often it ends up being used in ways that make it feel a little pointless. In this video, I try to take a look as to why, and also ways I would like games to try to address it. So this is my talking about why I think crafting is (kinda) pointless.

We are back with a new episode of Gaming For A Non-Gamer. This time I had my wife jump into the immersive world of Virtual Reality. I think that there is something about VR that feels really inaccessible for those who don't know much about it, so I wanted to see if that carried over into the actual game design of various VR titles. So, that is what I did and this is what virtual reality is like for someone who doesn't play games.

One of my favorite types of games are ones where I get to lie to my friends, and, most recently, I have been completely swept away by the Among Us train. I revel in icing people in electrical and pinning the vote on my poor, unsuspecting friends who deserve better. In this I look a bit at why these kinds of games are so special, how I play them, and also the reason I think Among Us has exploded in popularity and will continue to be popular and fun to play for a long while. So, this is my look at Among Us and the art of lying to your friends.

You ever wish you could erase your memory for the sole purpose of being able to replay certain games again for the first time? Yeah? Thought so. For me, I would give almost anything to play Breath of the Wild, Shadow of the Colossus, and Outer Wilds again for the first time again. The bigger issue is that I barely even feel like I can replay these games at all, despite them being three of my favorites of all time. So, in this video, I dive into why these games don't feel replayable to me, and pour one out for the games I wish I could play again for the first time.

With all of the talk The Last of Us Part 2's controversial story choices and general narrative, I figured it was about time to talk about a subject that everyone has been asking for: the similarities between The Last of Us Part 2 and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. I know this comparison has already been made thousands, if not millions of times, so I appreciate you bearing with me as I talk about it. So, this is a look at Hope, Humanity, and the Post-Apocalypse through the lens of The Last of Us series and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
In all seriousness, these are two properties I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and it has been interesting to see a lot of similarities pop up between The Last of Us Part II and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts despite the two being very, very different stories. With Kipo's final season on the horizon, this as a good of time as any to look at how it and other mediums explore hope, humanity, and the post-apocalypse. Anyway, thanks for your time, and enjoy.
