I tried Ray-cast shader as recommended by iovorrowor and the result is mind-blowing. It looks like CryEngine. The stage had to keep up with the awesomeness so I sculpted some normal maps for it. It took twelve nmaps to shade the whole stage. Totally worth the effort.
