Looks Delicious! | A History of Food Replicas | Iwasaki Takizō JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles 2025-08-27 | Although not the inventor, Iwasaki Takizō was the first person to successfully commercialize the making of "shokuhin sampuru" (food replicas) in Japan. Born in Gujō Hachiman in Gifu Prefecture, Mr. Iwasaki became an apprentice for a medicine trader in Osaka at 14, but returned home after contracting tuberculosis. After his recovery, he attempted various business ventures without success. Finally, in 1932, he established his own company in Osaka to manufacture and sell food replicas, which were still a novelty at the time. Looks Delicious! | Wax flowers JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles 2025-09-25 | As a young boy, Iwasaki Takizō was fascinated by the properties of wax. He observed that when melted wax fell onto a tatami mat (traditional Japanese interior floor covering), it would mold itself to the mat’s uneven surface, and when dropped into cold water, it resembled a flower in bloom. When he first encountered "shokuhin sampuru" (food replicas) as an adult, he immediately recognized that they were made of wax. Inspired, he decided to turn food replica making into a business and developed a method for producing intricate models using wax and agar jelly. The agar jelly turns white when set. Once the agar has set, the food items are removed to reveal the molds.● Casting: Colored wax, matching the original food items, is poured into the agar molds. Once hardened, the wax models are removed from the agar molds, and any excess material is trimmed away.● Coloring: The wax models are then colored by hand using airbrushes, stencils, and paint brushes.● Presentation: With reference to photographs and sketches, the different parts are assembled on a dish. Beyond Aesthetics | A Journey through Time & Tohoku Region JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles 2024-04-05 | In this two-part webinar, we featured the Tohoku (northeastern) region of Japan. The first part featured world-renowned architect, Tsuyoshi Tane, who is one of the featured artists and designed the scenography for the “DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN” exhibition, currently at view at JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles until April 14, 2024. Mr. Tane introduced the background stories and inspirations of the exhibition, and also shared insights gained from his research based on his manifesto "Archaeology of the Future," at the Goshono Jōmon Museum, nestled within the archaeological site of Goshono in Ichinohe, Iwate prefecture. The first part was a live virtual visit to Nakamura Ningyo, a renowned traditional Japanese doll-making studio that has preserved the artistry of crafting exquisite dolls for generations. Hiromine Nakamura, the fourth generation and future organization leader of Nakamura Ningyo, shared the intricate processes, detailing, and historical significance behind these culturally rich creations. Haruo Mitsuta’s articulated metal figurines enabled deep exploration of the anatomy and movement of Pokémon represented in his works, while Yuki Tsuboshima’s transformable ornaments twist their form (and the viewer’s minds) in their physical transformation between different Pokémon.
