In this video, I drive a full lap of the custom track Alpine Peak backwards. In order for a track to count as being completed backwards, you must start in lap 1 and travel through all of lap 0 backwards, finishing by reaching lap -1. We will be going through the tracks of the CTGP 1.03-1112 update alphabetically, and returning to any past tracks if breakthroughs are made that change the statistics of the progression of the challenge (more on this later in the description). Here, there are 3 respawns that are mandatory to complete the track backwards, each of which can be done with any amount of mushrooms. The respawns are as follows:
Respawn #1: to get to the top of the tower
Respawn #2: to get to the ice section
Respawn #3: to get to the top of the spiral

Backstory: This is a series I had originally planned to collaborate solely with Charlie on, however, since starting the project, Jellopuff helped out with the 2nd track, and Charlie stopped doing MKWii TASing, so a lot has changed. It may be that more people contribute to this, but Id prefer the videos to be more central to my channel since its way easier for people to understand the progression of the challenge if the progress updates are consistent with the previous ones (the titles and descriptions, the rules of the challenge, the explanations made, etc.). That being said, the only reason for the delay on uploading progress on these is down to my motivation to record them, and since youre reading this, it means I got the motivation to record this specific one. I have about 10 more tracks already done that just need to be recorded and edited (Charlie and I started in April and have been putting it off a LOT).
What I do in the video is; drive up to the higher path near the end of the lap (allowing me to skip a respawn up to the final bridge), then drive off the edge of the bridge to get respawned at the top of the tower. I then show three different potential strategies for getting up to the next platform without respawning, the last of which is the only successful one. First, I had hoped to use the boost panel to give me enough speed to clip off of the platforms wooden pillars. I was able to get a clip but not one high enough or with the right angle to land back on the platform. Second, I had hoped to get a large clip off of the front of the platform using a barrel roll, but was unable to actually get a clip with the angle the barrel roll gave. Finally, I simply got stuck on the edge of the track in order to get bounces that allowed me to barely get back on the platform. What follows is a very precise bounce and sideways hop to avoid respawning too early, which would have resulted in an additional respawn. After this, I go back to the start of the ice section and perform the final respawn up to the top of the spiral. The rest is fairly trivial.
There are a few statistics and various versions of this challenge that I will keep track of that allow for a better understanding of whats going on. Below is a list of all of them:
1. Completing the track backwards with the minimum number of respawns, where you have access to a certain amount of mushrooms (a = Infinite, b = 3, c = 2, d = 1, e = 0)
2. Completing the track backwards with the minimum number of respawns, then minimising the number of mushrooms from there
3. Completing the track backwards with the minimum number of mushrooms, regardless of respawn count

I decided yesterday that I wanted to TAS this track. I challenged myself to make an entire lap 1 in just that one day. 8 hours later, I finished. This is the result.

Some comments about the run:
- The miniturbo at 0:12 is released late due to QM on the ramp. It is harder than it looks to actually get a trick off the ramp when doing RFH, let alone as low of a trick as I get in the TAS.
- I do an up trick at 0:17. This is actually faster due to the fact that side tricks give bounces when landing this early. You can avoid the bounces by hopping when landing but that slows you down a bit here. For those wondering, down tricking makes no difference. The TAS syncs if you change the up trick input to a down trick input.
- The shortcut at 0:24 is very difficult to do well. Theres a very specific polygon on the planter that I want to trick off in order to get the correct balance of height, angle, and speed that allows me to reach the height of the shortcut path. In order to do so optimally, I do a down trick, which doesnt actually lose time, because I have to do very specific TF physics, and STA is limited by this to the point where its slower (you have to use a slower planter polygon in order to reach the shortcut path and do optimal STA).
- Input display at 0:30 :)
- The section from 0:31 to 0:38 is all one continuous strat. Every part of it is interdependent with other parts of it. First, the entire pool table is trickable, and the edges of it are boost panels, so theres no point tricking off the flip trick ramp before it, as it would give me a lower speed outside a wheelie and more height. Because I have a mushroom boost from the edges of the pool table, I have enough frames of offroad immunity that I can perform an offroad bounce, extending the amount of continuous boost time I have, saving time (this is done at the shroomspot of thomass GV NG lap 1). The only way to get to the offroad early enough to perform the bounce, I have to get a full low trick off the edge of the pool table, which requires hopping. Since I land less than 10 frames earlier from the previous ramp before having to hop, if I were to wheelie upon landing (bringing my speed to 120 instead of 117.614), a trick would immediately start, and I wouldnt be able to get a low trick off the edge of the pool table. So I instead hold a drift, hop, and trick, which then allows me to get low enough to offroad bounce. Exiting from this offroad bounce, I then land back on the track and bounce again, which allows me to hold my wheelie for slightly longer (as the trick boost has run out, meaning if I drift, I drop to 84.01 instead of staying at 96.6115), before then slip drifting to charge a miniturbo during the boost panels boost. This next miniturbo is NOT chained into the second one because I have to do a very precise mixed 08/spin drift to cut the inside edge of the track via a series of bounces. This specific U-turn took most of the final 2 hours of TASing alone to optimise. If you were to properly chain a drift here, the turn would be significantly wider, costing about 0.1.
- The mushroom at 0:38 is required to get on to the high path above (which allows you to cut the following turn tighter, have a 100 speed lock while realigning into that turn, and get an earlier trick boost landing). As far as Im aware, these in combination save more time than any other potential shroomspot. Id be happy to be proven wrong though (inb4 blaze releases a 3lap TAS of this next week with a new shortcut or something).

In this video, I drive a full lap of the custom track Candy Coaster backwards with the 3 mushrooms available in time trials. In order for a track to count as being completed backwards, you must start in lap 1 and travel through all of lap 0 backwards, finishing by reaching lap -1. We will be going through the tracks of the CTGP 1.03-1112 update (29 Sep 2021) alphabetically, and returning to any past tracks if breakthroughs are made that change the statistics of the progression of the challenge (more on this later in the description).

Here, there are NO respawns that are mandatory to complete the track backwards, and there are TWO sections requiring a single mushroom each.
There are 10 blocks on this track:
1/2. Getting up to the final/penultimate raised platforms
3. Getting up to the highest level straight
4. Getting across the gap on the highest level straight
5. Getting to the beginning of the cannon
6. Getting up to the ramp before the cannon
7/8/9. Getting out of the lowest/goomba/entry levels of the tunnel
10. Getting across the gap after the first turn
This is quite definitely the single most convoluted backwards project we have had to date. Originally, I had thought we might be able to complete the track backwards in 6 respawns, using a single mushroom to skip the 1st and 2nd blocks together (https://youtu.be/WW-O1tOBlo8), but shortly after found it could be done shroomless and demonstrated that it was indeed possible, except that the last respawn didnt put you behind the gap we were trying to cross (the 10th block), and so the track was deemed impossible to complete backwards (https://youtu.be/rjAWgqUyQwo).
EmuTheCat (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCag8yvhqE0P5nNef_0IcWvQ) then had an idea to skip the 1st/2nd blocks with 3 mushrooms 0 respawns instead of a shroomless respawn (which would be an improvement for 3+ mushroom routes), but neither he nor I could make it work (https://youtu.be/sZPbjHP080Q). this is police (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3f4F6RX4gBHOGxG6owYigg) showed a way to skip the 1st/2nd/3rd blocks with a 1 mushroom respawn, and later made it a shroomless respawn (https://youtu.be/cwJqZOvMpvc). During an investigation for minor time improvements, a HWG strat was found that gave potential for the 10th block to be skipped (https://youtu.be/fCYd574oTyI). After some progress updates (https://youtu.be/dkTjfNbQjao, https://youtu.be/C6E9XAZMKNU, https://youtu.be/4PyitUlrSRM), a workaround was found that made the 10th block possible shroomless 0 respawns (https://youtu.be/lUSLCdzZBMs), making the entire track possible backwards shroomless in 4 respawns (https://youtu.be/vPRAkOSQMNU).
After uploading that, we started making a cleaner (better lines) and faster (better character choice) version of the 4 respawn run, and looked out for any potential improvements that could be made. At the time, the whole track was locked to being shroomless because of the 1st/2nd/3rd block requiring a respawn, however this is police found a HWG spot (https://youtu.be/e6GaeoNQc6g) that would eventually be used to skip the 1st/2nd/3rd blocks shroomless 0 respawns (https://youtu.be/DkcoHUWPLhU). This opened up potential for the 4th block to skipped with 1 mushroom 0 respawns (https://youtu.be/1Kgye9_N2G8). Meanwhile, EmuTheCat was innovating using SWG to skip the 5th block shroomless 0 respawns (https://youtu.be/ETJKuhs77j8), and after further time improvements (https://youtu.be/FZcUaxwd97U), realised the 8th block was now open to be skipped with 1 mushroom 0 respawns (https://youtu.be/3mfTLu87kmw), which all in total brought the track down to 2 mushrooms 0 respawns, which is what the video shows.
I highly doubt this is the final state of the track since it is such an open environment, so I am looking forward to seeing what people come up with in the future to further improve the insane combination of strats that already exist.

For a full understanding of why this video is a big deal, please watch the entire thing. For a quick summary, read the following...
[1:26] the ending strat was originally decided to be a glitch because you drive on the wall, which (since there is an ultra shortcut) makes it a no ultra strategy. However, since you can do it without driving on the wall, you can just do it as such and it becomes a no glitch strategy too.
[2:26] Normally, this would be fine to leave as it is (option 1), because similar strategies with glitch and no-glitch equivalents do exist (on MG, DC, rSL, etc.), but I believe the classification of the ending strat itself needs to be reconsidered (option 2).
[3:26] Please note, when voting in the comments on whether you think the ending strat should count as a glitch or not, keep in mind that RFH/RFHA is and never has been considered a glitch, regardless of what you might think. Supergrinds are only a special type of RFH/RFHA that results in a build-up of large speed.
