In an unforgettable evening at the Darbar Festival 2016, the sacred atmosphere was transformed into a monsoon-soaked tapestry of sound by the legendary Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, torchbearers of the Banaras Gharana.
Performing the awe-inspiring Raag Miyan Malhar, the revered duo invoked the spirit of the rains—not just as a change in weather, but as a deeply spiritual experience, rooted in centuries of Hindustani tradition. This is no ordinary raga; Miyan Malhar, said to be composed by Tansen himself, carries the weight of royal courts, timeless devotion, and the gentle rage of thunderclouds.
The Mishra Brothers, with their seamless jugalbandi, brought alive the bhava (emotion), raga-rasa (essence), and the depth of shruti (microtones) in a way that few can. Their voice—resonant, fluid, divine—poured like first monsoon showers on the parched soul, reminding us of the true power of Hindustani classical music.
As they traversed the intricate alaaps and bol-taans, time stood still. It wasn't just a performance—it was an offering, a sadhana, a moment of surrender to the divine through melody.
🙏🏼 This was tradition at its most powerful—living, breathing, and radiantly alive.
To hear Raag Miyan Malhar sung by such masters, especially in the sacred setting of the Darbar Festival, is not merely a privilege—it’s a blessing.
🌿 Let us remember and cherish such moments of our living heritage. Classical music, in its purest form, still flows through our veins—thanks to maestros like Pandits Rajan & Sajan Mishra.

Learn more about the Raag:
Raag Yaman is one of the most beloved and foundational ragas in Hindustani classical music, known for its serene, devotional, and romantic mood. Sung during the early evening hours, Yaman evokes a sense of peace and longing, often described as uplifting yet introspective. It is based on the Kalyan thaat and employs the sharp Ma (Tivra Madhyam), which gives the raga its distinctive, ethereal charm. With a graceful ascent and descent, Yaman offers ample space for elaborate alaaps and imaginative improvisation. For centuries, it has been a favorite among maestros and students alike—a timeless gateway into the spiritual depths of Indian music.
