Miyajima Island Japan - daytrip filmed in time-lapse
While holidaying in Hiroshima Japan I made a daytrip to Miyajima Island. Miyajima Island is about half an hour from Hiroshima by train and then a quick 10 minute ferry ride from the mainland to the island.
Miyajima Island is well know for its temples and local foods. The main attraction is Itsukusima Shrine and the O-Torii gate. The O-Torii gate is covered with seawater at its base during high tide and if the weather conditions are right the torii gate looks like it's floating on water.
The most popular foods to sample on Miyajima Island are oysters and momiji cakes (small maple leaf shaped sponge cakes with filling).

Miyajima is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views.
While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water.
Miyajima Island, one of the most scenic spots in Japan, has long been regarded as an Island of Gods on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is a romantic and historical island where Itsukushima Shrine, a World Heritage site, is located, along with the Virgin Forest of Mt. Misen, and numerous preserved shrines, temples and historical monuments.
