Chakraborty was born in Barisal, Bangladesh on 16 June 1950.He was educated at the Scottish Church College in Kolkata, from where he earned his degree in Chemistry.
Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut in the film industry with the Hindi movie ‘Mrigayaa’ in 1976 directed by Mrinal Sen. In the movie; he made a wonderful acting performance and won the National Film Award for Best Actor. Since he never looked back in his long career time. Mithun was best known for his distinct dance technique in the films. Mithun made a wonderful dancing performance in the movie ‘Disco Dancer’ in 1982 and the actor is best remembering for the character Jimmy in the movie.
Mithun Chakraborty tied a knot with the former actress of India Yogeeta Bali in 1979. The couple has three sons named Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty and Ushmey Chakraborty and daughter Dishani Chakraborty. His elder son Mahaakshay Chakraborty is an actor
He has various residences scattered around the country. He has one cottage in Malad, West Mumbai, an apartment at Green Heights Mumbai and has over 1 acre of land in Tamil Nadu.
