According to AJ Perez ’13, MEng ’14, PhD ’23, we could make a dent in the eight gigatons of plastic waste the world has produced by converting it into building materials. Drawing on his MIT research, Perez spun out Atlas, a company that 3D prints building materials from recycled plastic. The company recently worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers to replace a trail bridge at the Hodges Village Dam in Oxford, Massachusetts with more durable recycled plastic-trussed bridge.
