Ever wonder what it’s like to play in the Masters or a U.S. Open – from how the nerves and adrenaline feel on the first tee, or how a player prepares for one of the biggest events on their calendar, or what it is like to join the top golfers in the world “up close & personal” at the event and in competition?
This live webcast from November 21, 2024 features a fireside chat with Kim Dinh (MIT, PhD ’20) who competed this year in the US Women’s Open.
The event is hosted by the MIT Alumni Golfers Association (MITAGA). Our group is open to golfers of all abilities, as well as those simply interested in the game. We offer events and programming that explore many aspects of golf (playing, technology, course design, history, etc), and do our best to provide an MIT angle. About the Speaker
Kim Dinh started playing golf at the age of 7 when her dad introduced her and her family to the game and played in her first tournament when she was 11. Since then, Kim has competed in tournaments from the local level to the national level, playing for her high school and college with the University of Wisconsin’s Varsity Golf team. After a 5-year hiatus to earn her Ph.D., Kim returned to competitive amateur golf in 2020. Since then, she has won the 2021 Michigan Amateur and the 2020 Michigan Mid-Amateur, and has competed in 4 USGA championships, highlighted by reaching the quarterfinals in the 2022 USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. In 2022, she partnered with Chaithra Katamneni to play in her first LPGA event in the 2022 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational. Her golfing prowess has now culminated in playing in the 2024 US Women’s Open!
Kim is currently a Senior Research Specialist at Dow where she works on discovering new heterogeneous catalysts, and is passionate about building equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM and golf. She is chair of the Mid-Michigan AIChE Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, co-chair of the Midland ACS Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and a volunteer assistant coach with her alma mater’s women’s golf team. Prior to joining Dow, she earned her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from MIT and her B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin. At MIT, she was president of the Club Golf Team for 3 years and, at the University of Wisconsin, she was a student-athlete on the Varsity Golf team. She was awarded the 2015 Big Ten Medal of Honor and was the Big Ten’s nominee for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
