The most recent beta core seems to run Descent very well... but I did have to use a tool called HX DOS Extender to get it to run. It might also run under Windows.
I have some VHDs with the HD DOS Extender tool and the Descent demo here:

I am running this with DOS 7.1 from Windows 98 though. I used the HX DOS Extender from the FreeDOS VHD here:

There are two on it, but its the new one I am using. There is an "add path" in the bin folder and it will have to be edited so that it adds the correct path, then you can run Descent and other games using the "runwin" command, which as it is now, helps run some games that throws DOS4GW errors.
