On television, there is an unwritten rule: the presenter needs to be in control. Of the words, the posture, the situation. The problem is that live TV does not go very well with control. A touch screen that no one knew existed, a spider that decides to appear at the wrong time, a line that vanishes in the middle of the broadcast, a fifty-four-year-old husband who decides to make revelations in front of everyone. These are situations that no script anticipates and no director can prevent. And when they happen, the network is left with no way out; after all, there is no way to cut it, no way to erase it, no way to pretend it did not go on the air.
