Dominating the center of Louise Bennett-Coverley Square (formerly Gordon Town Square) in St. Andrew, Jamaica, is an 8-foot-tall, larger-than-life bronze statue of Miss Lou, created by internationally acclaimed Jamaican sculptor and painter Basil Watson.
The Gordon Town Square was officially renamed Miss Lou Square, or Louise Bennett-Coverley Square, on September 8, 2019, as a tribute to the woman often referred to as the "Mother of Jamaican Culture."
The Honourable Louise Simone Bennett-Coverley OM, OJ, MBE (born September 7, 1919 – died July 26, 2006), affectionately known by her pen name Miss Lou, was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, actress, writer, and educator who played a significant role in preserving and celebrating Jamaican language, culture, and folklore.
