Are miracles, signs, and wonders for today's Christian?
When it comes to miracles, signs, and wonders, there are many cessationists who oppose seeking signs and wonders, using Matthew 16:4 to rebuke anyone pursuing any measure of signs, miracles, or wonders. The verse states: "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign..."
I have learned that believers who live with powerful and active faith and righteousness will always offend the lukewarm and religious.
The truth with miracle, signs, and wonders is that our faith without works is dead. Which means, our faith without the manifestation and actions of true faith is dead religion.
Once this verse is studied in context, reading the the verses leading to and from the verse, you'll discover the audience, and once the audience is understood, you'll discover that Jesus wasn't renouncing the manifestation or seeking of signs which also includes the Holy Spirit, but rather, Jesus was rebuking the spirits of legalism and unbelief.
Let's read that scripture in context:
Matthew 16:1-4 NASB
The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. But He replied to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.
In these verses, Jesus isn't rebuking the Pharisees and Sadducees for merely seeking a sign, but rather, knowing the condition and intention of their hearts, Jesus is rebuking their need to have more irrefutable signs as more proof to them that Jesus is who He proclaimed He is.
