Full time RV travel has brought us to Herkimer to mine for diamonds. This was also our first time camping at a KOA Campground. We can definitely say that there's a big difference between KOA campgrounds and Thousand Trails campgrounds. Herkimer KOA was immaculate, well maintained and probably the nice campground we had stayed at in our first four months of full time RV living. We definitely recommend staying at a KOA if you have the chance (and if you can afford it).
The main reason we stayed at Herkimer KOA was for the Herkimer Diamond Mine right across the street. For a little more than $10 you can mine Herkimer Diamonds for the day. Herkimer Diamonds are actually double-terminated quartz crystals, but they look like a cut and polished diamond when they come out of the rocks. Based on our research, the Herkimer Diamonds we smashed out of the rocks are worth at least $100, so the $48 we paid to was definitely worth it. If your ever in the area, we definitely recommend stopping at Herkimer KOA and mining for diamonds.
